European Commission’s DG Research establishes Marine Resources Unit

European Commission’s DG Research establishes Marine Resources Unit

With the re-organization of DG Research and Innovation implemented on 1 January 2014 a new Marine Resources Unit has been set up.

The newly established Marine Resources Unit is placed under the Directorate F – Bioeconomy and is headed by Sieglinde Gruber who previously was the head of unit for international cooperation with North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Unit will start off with 23 people in personnel. The restructuring of DG Research and Innovation’s internal organisation has been implemented together with the launch of Horizon 2020, the new European framework programme for research and innovation funding. The establishment of the unit reflects the prominent role of marine and maritime research as part of Societal Challenge 2 and the inclusion of marine dimensions in other societal challenges that the programme addresses.

With the re-organisation of DG Research the focus of the DG will be shifted more towards policy related tasks. This will include in particular strategy development, forward looking activities, the definition of work programmes, ex-ante and ex-post evaluations and the feeding of results from research projects into policy.

Simultaneously, executive agencies will take over the programme implementation (e.g. managing calls for proposals, handling proposal evaluations, preparing grant agreements). As a result, the executive agencies will be reinforced with approximately 1000 new employees by 2020. DG Research and Innovation plans to cut its staff by 271 officials and 108 contract agents between 2014 and 2020.
