European Commission Consultation: Marine Litter Reduction

The European Commission would like input for the establishment of a quantitative reduction headline target for marine litter

The European Commissions’ 7th Environment Action Plan saw a call for a "quantitative headline reduction target" for marine litter. As a result, the Directorate-General for Environment is requesting input from citizens, organisations and public authorities to their consultation, the aim of which is to gauge opinions on various actions and policies that are being considered to address the problem. The consultation is already underway and will close on the 18th of December 2013, the results of which will contribute towards the formulation of the Union-wide reduction target for 2020.

In addition to the 7th Environment Action Plan’s outline of marine litter’s negative impacts – ranging from human health, fisheries to marine ecosystems – such concerns are echoed in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The MSFD named the marine litter problem as one of eleven descriptors that need attention to achieve "good environmental status" of our seas and oceans by 2020.

The launch of JPI Oceans’ own pilot action into the investigation of the ecological aspects of micro-plastics in the marine environment represents a development in one of many categories of marine litter research, the details of which can be found here.

Before responding to the consultation it’s recommended you check the background document and the Commission’s working document.
