European Maritime Day Workshop: Knowledge-Based Governance of Deep-Sea Resources

JPI Oceans will host a workshop on Knowledge-Based Governance of Deep-Sea Resources at this year's European Maritime Day. This workshop will discuss how research can contribute to the development of deep-sea governance regimes, in particular under the ISA and the UN BBNJ process, and the role Europe should play in shaping these.

The session will feature four speakers, from the European research community, addressing the research needs for effective governance of deep-sea resources. The topics covered will be:

  1. Governance Challenges for Deep-Sea Resources and the role of Science, Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Coordinator COST Network Ocean Governance for Sustainability
  2. Understanding the long-term ecological impact of Deep-Sea Mining, Dr. Matthias Haeckel, Coordinator JPI Oceans MiningImpact Pilot Action
  3. Governing Deep-Sea Ecosystems and Biological Resources, Prof. Ann Vanreusel, University of Gent
  4. Creating the knowledge base for governance – Future research needs for the Deep-Sea: Seline Trevisanut, European Marine Board Deep-Sea Working Group

The European Maritime Day (EMD) is organised annually by the European Commission’s DG MARE to raise the visibility of maritime sectors and support an integrated approach to maritime affairs. The main event is the European Maritime Day Conference, held in a different region each year. This platform welcomes Europe's growing maritime community, with industry professionals from across the EU joining policymaker to discuss, debate and exchange best practises.

In the past, JPI Oceans has actively participated in the conference and last year jointly hosted a workshop with the European Marine Board on “New approaches to training marine professionals: A road to innovation and delivering blue growth”.

The 2016 conference, located in Turku on May 18-19 (Finland), will focus on blue growth, ocean governance, clean energy and skills development.
