JPI Oceans will host a workshop to develop a Shared Vision for the Blue Bioeconomy at this year's European Maritime Day on 31 May.

The Blue Bioeconomy is a relatively new concept, created by multiple industry sectors and research specialisms seeking new, sustainable approaches to maximise the economic potential of marine bioresources. It is generally accepted that continuing to develop the European Blue Bioeconomy will lead to economic growth, not only in the marine sector, but industries such as food, health, chemicals, advanced materials and many more. By bringing together many actors and stakeholders from the marine and those sectors that can add value to marine biomaterials, it will be possible to identify ways to address the many research and innovation priorities they face.

The workshop will invite maritime and other stakeholders to discuss their needs and find ways for them to contribute to Blue Bioeconomy. The outcome of the workshop is to develop an understanding of the multitude of opportunities within the Blue Bioeconomy and identify how to work together in adding value to marine bioresources. These outcomes will feed into the proposed Cofund project on the Blue Bioeconomy, forming the starting point for future collaborations.

Speakers:

 1. Blue Bioeconomy Cofund

Kristin Thorud, Special Advisor (Research Council of Norway)

 2. Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking

Nelo Emerencia, Director Programming (Bio-based Industries Consortium)

 3. Enterprise Europe Network

Milen Baltov, Vice Rector of Research and International Cooperation (Burgas Free University)

Timing and Place: Thursday, 31 May, 09:00-10.30. Room: Kiten

The European Maritime Day (EMD) is organised annually by the European Commission’s DG MARE to raise the visibility of maritime sectors and support an integrated approach to maritime affairs. The main event is the European Maritime Day Conference, held in a different region each year. This platform welcomes Europe's growing maritime community, with industry professionals from across the EU joining policymakers to discuss, debate and exchange best practices.

In the past, JPI Oceans has actively participated in the conference and last year hosted a workshop on “Enabling and Cross-Cutting Maritime Technologies”.

The conference will take place on 31 May and 1 June 2018 in Burgas, Bulgaria.
