EUs biggest ever call for marine and maritime research

On the 10th of July 2012 the third and final cross-thematic call of its kind will be launched under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) "The Ocean of Tomorrow 2013". The call has a budget of 55 million Euro. On June 6th, 2012 an information day took place in Brussels for a first meeting between prospective partners.

Patricia REILLY from the Cabinet of Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn stressed that the challenges we are facing in our seas and oceans cannot be tackled separately and recalled that the EUs Integrated Maritime Policy argued the need for “…a strategic approach to tackle these challenges in an integrated way from the very outset. We need to understand the interrelations between the different maritime activities, the technologies and the marine environment itself in order to generate synergies and to find the best possible solutions. With the EU Strategy for marine and maritime research we seek to develop the integrated scientific and technological knowledge necessary to support so-called Blue Growth. ”

The European Commission stressed that the Oceans of Tomorrow 2013 call links to the "Horizon 2020" proposal, which acknowledges the importance of multi-disciplinary approaches and to the EU Strategy for Marine and Maritime Research and “Europe 2020” to contribute to smart, inclusive and sustainable growth for Europe. Cross-fertilisation between various scientific disciplines and economic sectors will be facilitated by bringing together scientists, technology providers, industrial partners (including SMEs) and relevant end-users.

Project proposals can be submitted via the FP7 Participation Portal till January 7th, 2013 on four topics: biosensors, innovative multifunctional sensors, innovative antifouling materials for maritime applications and innovative transport and deployment systems for the offshore wind energy sector.
