French “Ocean and seas program” presented in Brussels

On 19 April 2012 the French “Ocean and seas program” was presented to stakeholders and EU institutions at CLORA (Club des Organismes de Recherche Associés) Brussels. The “Oceans and seas program” was developed by the “French research alliance for environmental research” (AllEnvi) which ensures the French engagement in JPI Oceans. The presentation showed strong synergies between the ocean and seas programmes of AllEnvi and JPI Oceans.

AllEnvi brings together the expertise of French research institutes, universities and schools in the field of environmental sciences to coordinate the entire breadth of expertise and facilitate a cross-sectoral approach to environmental issues. Its general objective is to create a dynamic of scientific excellence in France and Europe and to promote an ecological transition towards a green economy. At EU level, AllEnvi aims to contribute to European environmental research, stimulating innovation, contribute to the development of rules and standards.

AllEnvi consists of 12 thematic working groups including “Oceanography and marine resources.” The “Ocean and seas” program is built on four pillars: marine ecosytems knowledge, support to public policy (such as the MSFD) for a sustainable exploitation of marine resources, coastal zones management, and a program dedicated to outermost regions focusing on sustainable exploitation of resources and environment. Two additional pillars are dedicated to research infrastructures and technologies.

The development of a the Joint programming Initiative on Seas and Oceans is a mid-term objective of the working group on “Oceanography and marine resources.” In particular, AllENVI facilitate cooperation in the area of marine infrastructures in terms of research and operational activities. Thus, the Mixed Service Unit (UMS) “French ocean research vessel fleet” was created on 2 March 2011. It is supported by four research operators: the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Research Institute for the Exploration of the Sea (Ifremer), the French Polar Institute ‘Paul Emile Victor' (IPEV) and the French Research Institute for Development (IRD).
