JPI Oceans commitments to Our Ocean Conference 2018, Indonesia

JPI Oceans is announcing a commitment to new funding upwards of 9 million USD for cutting-edge international research into microplastics in the marine environment from 2020 onwards.

The Our Ocean Conference, hosted by The Government of the Republic of Indonesia, is focused on generating commitments and taking actions to maintain the sustainability of our oceans. Since 2014, Our Ocean Conference has successfully generated commitments totalling around 18 billion dollars (USD) and 12.4 million square kilometres of marine protected areas. Our Ocean Conference 2018 will demonstrate significant progress on past commitments and inspire new commitments made for the continuation of a more concerted and integrated actions for protecting the oceans. These actions are aimed to reduce marine pollution, manage aquatic resources sustainably, mitigate climate change, and set up marine sanctuaries in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. JPI Oceans member countries are planning to launch a new call on 20 November 2018 for research proposals on microplastics (tbc).

By aligning national research strategies and funding JPI Oceans aims to increase the impact of marine research through its actions. During the 2017 conference JPI Oceans made four commitments;

  • Studying the environmental impacts and risks of deep-sea mining
  • MarTERA: Developing sustainable maritime technologies.
  • Supporting transnational research projects, investigating microplastics in the marine environment
  • Funding research and innovation that will support the development of a sustainable and climate-friendly blue bioeconomy

Progress on each of these commitment is also featured in the European Commission's video.
