JPI Oceans meeting stakeholders

The Director of the JPI Secretariat, Kathrine Angell-Hansen, presented the JPI OCEANS progress to a broad audience of stakeholders from the marine and maritime community in Brussels on 25 November during the 1st MARCOM+ open marine and maritime Stakeholder Forum.

The presentation was part of the programme at the 1st MARCOM+ European Marine and Maritime S&T Partnership Open Forum providing a timely opportunity for the participants to discuss the outcomes of the Belgian Presidency EurOCEAN 2010 conference and the adopted Ostend Declaration.

Angell-Hansen’s presentation on ‘Consolidated marine and maritime scientific advice: a policy end user perspective’ recalled that the science community welcomed the JPI Oceans in Ostend and that the JPI Oceans indeed echoes many of the challenges addressed in the declaration. The Joint Programming Initiative differs from other ERA initiatives in that it is top driven by Member states in order to respond to policy needs and grand challenges. It should be regarded as a process rather than an instrument.

The FORUM meeting focused on Science for Policy, Science for Innovation and Science Strategy.

The meeting was attended by several of the members of the JPI OCEANS Task Force group including the Co-chairs of the JPI Oceans Prof. Joan Albaiges and Dr. Rudy Herman.

The MARCOM+ project is funded as a support action project through FP7 and runs for 24 months from 1 January 2010.

Thus, MARCOM+ aims to support the marine and maritime science communities to test mechanisms for the establishment of a European marine science partnership that would contribute to developing interactions between partners (Member States, regional authorities, the research community, industry and other stakeholders).
