Meeting JPI Oceans - Cabinet Commissioner Moedas

On July 19th JPI Oceans met with Robert Schröder, Member of Cabinet of Commissioner Moedas following up on the European Commission’s Communication on Horizon Europe.
At the meeting Vice-Chair Joachim Harms presented the viewpoints of JPI Oceans, with support of Gert Verreet Management Board (MB) member from Flanders, Belgium and Sofia Cordeiro MB member from Portugal.  From the JPI Oceans secretariat Jacky Wood and Kathrine Angell-Hansen attended, as well as Sieglinde Gruber from the European Commission’s DG R&I.

At the meeting Joachim Harms emphasised the increasing visibility and political interest in the oceans, being on the G7 and G20 agendas, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG14 and others), and the forthcoming United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). He underlined the fact that JPI Oceans had matured into a legal entity, and was thus able to offer a long term sustained partnership with the European Commission in the context of Horizon Europe. He further emphasized that JPI Oceans would like to be actively involved in the detailed strategic planning process, having knowledge of different programmes and mechanisms for collaboration.  By aligning resources, as envisaged in the concept of the European Research Area, JPI Oceans can help define and commit resources on agreed topics, through cofunding mechanisms, as well as in the possible missions foreseen in Horizon Europe. The Board members stressed the importance of early involvement in the planning processes and welcomed that Horizon Europe is seeking  to work in partnership. They emphasized that missions will have to draw on resources beyond Horizon Europe to succeed, as the budgets available at the level of the Horizon Europe will be limited and cooperation with the member states will therefore be fundamental.
