Workshop: Scientific support to Munition in the Sea

As part of JPI Oceans joint action on “Munition in the sea”, CNR is organizing a workshop on 6-7 December 2018 in Rome, addressing scientific gaps and how research can bring substantial contributions for solutions and advances in knowledge.
Ammunition dumped at sea during or after wars constitutes an environmental and safety issue in many European countries. To facilitate research coordination and exchange of knowledge across European countries JPI Oceans has therefore initiated a joint action on “Munition in the sea” to facilitate research coordination and exchange of knowledge across European countries.

A workshop to exchange practices and identify research gaps has been held in Oslo in June 2018. The workshop was focused on the scenario of tackling the challenges of unexploded ordnances in areas where pipelines and cables are planned to be installed. However, the outputs can be taken into consideration at a more general level as well for risk assessments, remediation options and spatial planning. Based on the outcomes assessed, the workshop organized by the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) will address some major aspects for which research can bring substantial contributions for solutions or advances in knowledge. Specifically, four key aspects will be addressed: knowledge-based support to decisions, large scale identification of objects, chemicals sensing and remediation, and cost-efficient explosions remediation.

The workshop will feature one day of keynote speeches and four parallel sessions to debate how available scientific results or advances in knowledge can impact on solutions. The second day will be focused on an open discussion between experts and representatives of the JPI Oceans Management Board to elaborate on future steps.

The workshop will take place at the Institute of Marine Engineering (INM), Via di Vallerano 139, 00128 Rome, Italy.
