A new paper published in Nature's Scientific Reports with the support of the JPI Oceans BASEMAN project adds further evidence that microplastic abundance in the Mediterranean is among the highest in the world.

Although microplastics are recognized as an emerging contaminant in the environment, currently neither sampling, extraction, purification nor identification approaches are standardised, making the increasing numbers of microplastics studies hardly -if at all- comparable. BASEMAN is an interdisciplinary and international collaborative research project that aims to overcome this problem.

The goal of the session was to raise awareness of this research topic within the ICES community and discuss if there is a need to establish an ICES Working Group on the topic of microplastics.
