Blue Carbon for Climate-Smart Maritime Spatial Planning

  • 03 Jun 2026 12:30 - 03 Jun 2026 13:00
Nhow Brussels Bloom Hotel, Level 1 exhibition area, Rue Royale 250, 1210 Brussels

This session will present the JPI Oceans policy brief Pathways and opportunities for a better policy integration of Blue Carbon Ecosystems under the EU LULUCF Regulation and explore how blue carbon ecosystems can be more effectively integrated into national climate and maritime planning frameworks. Particular attention will be given to the role of Maritime Spatial Planning in translating blue carbon science into concrete decisions on spatial planning.

With the EU Ocean Pact creating renewed momentum for ocean-climate action, the briefing will highlight how blue carbon can support Member States’ climate ambitions, contribute to biodiversity and restoration objectives, and open a practical discussion on the links between climate reporting under LULUCF and spatial decision-making through MSP.
