On 6-10 September, JPI Oceans will be at the Munitions Clearing Week in Kiel, Germany. Speakers from JPI Oceans at the conference include Thorsten Kiefer, Executive Director, Joachim Harms, Vice Chair of the Management Committee, and Aaron Beck, coordinator of the HOTMIC project.
The event will address the whole spectrum of pressing issues in legacy munition clearance. Through panel debates, technology showcases and roundtables it will cover the state of scientific research, environmental and societal impacts, legal aspects and much more.
The presence of unexploded ammunition in European sea basins exposes the environment and civil society to serious safety risks and the leakage of pollutants. Since 2014, a dedicated JPI Oceans Joint Action aims to coordinate research and innovation to assess risks, define priorities and suggest intervention options with regards to munition in the marine environment. In 2020, JPI Oceans has turned this effort into a Knowledge Hub, in order to harness the experience and knowledge accumulated in six years.
