Vacancy: Science Officer, JPI Oceans (70%) and KDM (30%)

Through a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Kiel University is seeking to recruit a Science Officer, 100 %, contract limited to 31.12.2024, to join both the European office of KDM - German Marine Research Consortium (30%) and the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans) Secretariat in Brussels (70%). The availability of this position is conditional on the approval of the project.

Science Officer responsibilities

At JPI Oceans Secretariat you will:

  • Develop and drive forward 2-4 Joint Actions and strategic engagements, working closely with the lead countries, board members, secretariat team, external experts and relevant stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the preparation and organisation of board meetings, events, workshops and networking activities and assist communication and outreach (websites, reports, minutes, newsletters, etc.).
  • With other staff members, maintain strategic oversight of and connection with developments in national, European and international policy of strategic or practical relevance to JPI Oceans.
  • Undertake other specific tasks.

At KDM Secretariat you will:

  • Work with the marine research community and KDM Strategy Groups, especially in the fields of marine biodiversity, protection and sustainable use, as well as pollution.
  • Help to disseminate research results and scientific information to policy-makers, civil society, industry and other relevant stakeholders, by organising meetings, workshops and science-policy briefings.
  • Contribute to European and global marine research programme and policy development such as the EU Mission ‘Restore our Seas and Waters 2030’ and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
Requirements:
  • MSc or higher academic degree in Marine Sciences or any ocean-related discipline, ideally with a background in marine ecology, ocean pollution, protection and sustainable use;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in German and English are required. Knowledge of other European languages would be an asset;
  • Excellent organizational skills; capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and to meet deadlines;
  • Good team player with a constructive and flexible attitude, able to exercise discretion, diplomacy and tolerance;
  • Good communication skills, including ability to summarise and communicate complex information for a variety of audiences;
  • Experience of research programme or project management in a national public administration such a ministry and/or research funding or performing organisation would be a plus;
  • Computer literacy (particularly Office applications).
Practical information

Conditions:

  • The Science Officer will be based primarily at the Brussels offices of KDM (Blvd St. Michel 80) and JPI Oceans (Rue du Trône 4). The science officer will be hired by the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and allocated to the two Brussels offices of KDM and JPI.
  • The requirements for secondment (immediate prior employment agreement subject to social security contributions in Germany) must be met.
  • The science officer will be hired under a German contract for up to 36 months. The salary will be based on the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst – TV-L 13 - and include an expatriation allowance.
