AMOC at the crossroads, Arctic Circle Assembly 2025

How will a sudden change in the function of AMOC, a reduction, or even a collapse impact Iceland, Europe, and the world? How certain are changes, how fast will they occur, what will they mean for society, and will there be any warning signs? Under the umbrella of JPI Oceans and JPI Climate, a group of scientists have set out to gather and assess the latest science in a concerted effort over the next year. This session will investigate and debate the ocean currents and what they mean for our future. Join us for a thrilling dive into latest ocean research and policy makers reactions.

AMOC at the crossroads, Arctic Circle Assembly 2025

  • 16 Oct 2025 09:45 - 16 Oct 2025 10:45
Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, Reykjavík, Iceland

This session will be organised in two parts, starting with concise presentations on Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) research, followed by a moderated discussion on the latest research findings, the upcoming report on the AMOC, policy advice and responses. This session is inspired by the 2024 Arctic Circle Assembly AMOC session where Professor Stefan Rahmstorf handed a letter signed by 44 climate scientists to the Icelandic minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate, urging the Nordic Council to support research into and action to prevent the collapse of the AMOC. The session also features and discusses the upcoming report on the AMOC initiated by JPI Climate and JPI Oceans and co-chaired by Professor Hans-Otto Pörtner and Dr. Gerard McCarthy.
