About the event

Ahead of the Atlantic Summit Galway 2026, JPI Oceans and the Marine Institute will bring together policymakers, researchers, and marine stakeholders to discuss how blue carbon ecosystems can be better integrated into European policy frameworks.

The event will showcase the three policy briefs developed by the JPI Oceans Blue Carbon Knowledge Hub, addressing the integration of blue carbon ecosystems into:

Together, these briefs provide science-based recommendations to strengthen the role of blue carbon ecosystems within EU marine, climate, biodiversity, and restoration policies. They highlight how these ecosystems can contribute simultaneously to climate mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, coastal resilience, and sustainable ocean governance.

The event will increase the visibility and uptake of the Blue Carbon Knowledge Hub policy recommendations, strengthen awareness of blue carbon ecosystems as strategic assets for climate and biodiversity policy, and foster dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and implementation actors. It will also contribute to ongoing discussions surrounding the European Ocean Pact and future Ocean Act.
