About the ASLO ASM 2023

Resilience and Recovery in Aquatic Systems

Initially this meeting was scheduled to be held in Palma de Mallorca in 2021, but due to COVID-19, it became necessary to hold the ASLO ASM 2021 virtually. In 2023, the ASLO ASM will take place in person in Palma de Mallorca, 4-9 June with a focus on resilience and recovery in aquatic systems.

Concepts of resilience and recovery do not only apply to aquatic ecosystems but also to societies when faced with disruptions and crises. Past events have shown that adaptability and decisiveness are important keys to resilience and recovery. Disruptions are opportune moments for setting up strategies for management and recovery. Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, ASLO ASM 2023 looks for solutions and get united for whatever crisis we face by incorporating the theme of resilience and recovery in aquatic systems into the plenary sessions.

JPI Oceans’ sessions
  • SS081 JPI Oceans Joint Action: Ecological Aspects of Microplastics – From Scientific Findings to Political Action

Based on the output of a first call on ecological aspects of microplastics in the marine environment, JPI Oceans the project partners in collaboration with the JPI Oceans Secretariat, will present the recent findings of the funded projects. The aim of our session is to present project outcomes thus far and to discuss with the audience how these scientific results can help policy makers and other user groups take action.

  • SS093 Coastal Blue Carbon Ecosystems: Advances and Challenges

In April 2023, following a one-year scoping process, the JPI Oceans Management Board adopted Blue Carbon as a new Joint Action, with Ireland as lead and France as co-lead. In a previous scoping process the Blue Carbon group of JPI Oceans has identified challenges and needs which will be presented during this session and help to close identified knowledge gaps.
