The Joint Action Science for Good Environmental Status enters operational activities in July 2022 with a one-week long research cruise endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade.

Setting off to sea

The Joint Action Science for Good Environmental Status is entering operational activities with a seagoing campaign from 9-15 July 2022. A group of about 20 scientists will be on board the brand new RV Belgica for a one-week observing campaign off the Belgian coast. On board will be experts from Belgium, Italy, Malta, France and Norway. In a joint letter of agreement 12 institutions commit to in-kind contributions of approximately 700 000 Euro for the operating the cruise and analysing samples and data. The operational activities start with the cruise in July 2022 and the sample and data analysis is foreseen to continue until the end of 2023.

The cruise is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade and is part of JPI Oceans' contribution to the Decade. JPI Oceans will run communication and dissemination in real time in our social media channels, so follow JPI Oceans on InstagramTwitter, Facebook and LinkedIn!

The Joint Action Science for Good Environmental Status was launched in 2019. It aims to establish an innovative approach for the assessment of Good Environmental Status of marine ecosystems. The central idea is to no longer focus on the evaluation of the individual descriptors as described in the MSFD, but address them in an integrated way via the network functionality of complex marine ecosystems.

Art and science

In addition, JPI Oceans is delighted that one of the runners up in the JPI Oceans Photo and Art Competition will be joining the cruise as artist on board. The student of marine and environmental sciences and participant in the HOTMIC project Sarah-Marie Kröger will illustrate the research and activities of the cruise. Kröger has a unique visual style and will contribute an artistic perspective to the communication from the cruise. You can see more of her work at Science meets art and her Instagram account.
