Large quantities of munitions, including unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the First and Second World Wars, remain on the seabed in European waters and beyond. Their presence creates challenges for the protection of marine ecosystems, maritime activities, offshore development, and public safety.
This workshop will provide a forum for researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, military experts, intergovernmental organisations, NGOs, and public authorities to exchange knowledge and experience, focusing on the main issues affecting the Mediterranean Sea and the European Atlantic Ocean, identifying practical approaches to managing underwater munitions, and encouraging stronger international cooperation on clearance, remediation, and governance in support of the European Ocean Pact.
